Super Smash Brothers for Nintendo 3DS Review

A Smash Hit

Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS is the first handheld version of the popular Nintendo fighting game series.  The console version of this game has a huge fan base, so this version was one of this year's most anticipated video game releases.  It sold one million copies its first weekend in Japan.  Fortunately, it was just released in the United States market.  We have gotten our hands on a copy, and have gotten a chance to play through it a few times.

This game really excels in the gameplay department.  The fighting mechanic is excellent, and the game controls are top-notch.  There are a wide array of character moves, and with the addition of new custom moves, a whole new world of gameplay possibilities is opened.  Despite being on a handheld system, the characters move at a smooth 60 frames per second, even with 3D mode on.  There is a diverse roster of characters for various popular Nintendo franchises.  Characters from other companies, such as Mega Man (Capcom), Pac Man (Namco Bandai), and Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega) are present on the roster as well.  There is a good power balance between each of these diverse characters, as no character is overpowered.  Every character has a weakness that can be exploited by another character.  The menu screens are well designed and attractive.  The only problem that we encountered when playing the game, was during online sessions, where we experienced some input lag.  We would press a button to execute a move, and it would take some seconds for it to register onscreen.  While the online players' wireless internet signal strength and reliability plays a huge role in this problem, we did find that this was a consistent issue, during several online sessions.

Overall, Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS is a fun and well-polished game.  If you are a fan of the Smash Bros series, or if you are just looking for a great new game for your Nintendo 3DS, then this is a must buy.

Bottom Line:

+ Fast and Smooth Gameplay, Good Character Balance, Diverse Character Roster, Sleek Menus

- Online Lag
